Sarah Margaret Bickersteth Ottley was born at Wakefield, Yorkshire on 15 March 1897, daughter of John Bickersteth Ottley (5 February 1845-11 January 1914), a solicitor and official receiver in bankruptcy, and his wife Margaret née Wray (1868-1928), who married at Betws-Y-Coed, Llanrwst, Denbighshire on 19 August 1896. In 1901, Peggy, as she was known, was a 4-year-old, living at 1 Hatfield Street, Wakefield with her parents, 56-year-old John, who was born at Acton, Suffolk, and 36-year-old Margaret, with her 3-year-old sibling John Laurence Young (1898-1917). She attended her aunt's school, her aunt Alice (1840-1912) was co-founder and first head-mistress of the Alice Ottley School for Girls, now the Worcester Royal Grammar School, and in 1911 young Peggy was living with another of her aunt's, 62-year-old Caroline Agnes Ottley (1849-8 April 1938), at 38 Britannia Square, Worcester, both Alice and her sister Caroline were born at Acton, Suffolk. In 1939, Peggy was an assistant school mistress, living at 1 Trinity Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire, and she later moved to Southwold, Suffolk. Peggy was a committee member and exhibitor at the Southwold Art Circle. Sarah Margaret Bickersteth Ottley died at 59 Pier Avenue, Southwold on 20 November 1993, she was unmarried.
