MATHEW, George de Montfort
George de Montfort Mathew was baptised at Walton-cum-Felixstowe, Suffolk on 7 May 1857, second son of Henry Coldham Mathew (1825-22 September 1910), a Lieut.Col. in the Norfolk Militia and a magistrate, and his wife Emily De Vere Mathew née Hollingsworth, who married at Stowmarket, Suffolk on 22 December 1851. George studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art in 1884 obtaining his certificate in freehand drawing. In 1881, living at Langer House, Undercliff Road, Walton-cum-Felixstowe with his parents, 55-year-old Henry and 48-year-old Emily and his 20-year-old sibling Elizabeth Maria, and twenty years later George, an organist, was still living Langer House with his widowed father but by 1911 as a 52-year-old artist painter had moved to The Street, Chelmondiston, Ipswich, Suffolk. A painter in oil and watercolour and exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1883 from Langer House, Felixstowe, three oil paintings 'A Still Day, Harwich Harbour', 'Felixstowe Cliffs and Watch Tower' and 'Old Porch, St John's Chapel, Needham', in 1884 three oils 'Harwich from the Oyster Ponds', 'Caught by a Nor'Easter, in Ballast' and 'The Mouth of the Orwell' and in 1885 'Pilot Boats' and a watercolour 'Felixstowe'. He became a member of the Ipswich club 1887-1930 and was a regular exhibitor with over 125 works 1883-1932, the subjects mostly local views including watercolour ‘Aldeburgh Lifeboat making for Harwich’ (1894) and ‘Floodgates, Flatford Mill’ and ‘A Peep of the Orwell' (1898) and in 1923 had four paintings on show 'Sketch of Willow', 'Cornfield', 'Kesgrave Heath in Spring' and a pen & colour drawing 'Sheringham Beach'. George de Montfort Mathew died at Sidegate Lane, Ipswich on 15 March 1932 aged 74, he was unmarried.
